Sometimes when you look at pictures of living rooms on design shows you get the impression that the designers are more interested in making a fashion statement than they are in creating a livable space for a family.
Of course, you want your living room to have a nice sense of style, but chances are that you want your living room to be a living room—a place where you and your family and guests are comfortable. What are the things that will make your living room more livable? It really comes down to your personal lifestyle.
What’s Your Entertaining Style?
A major factor in determining the kind of living room you want to include in your new home is how you plan to use the room. Is your entertaining style more formal, or do you tend toward a casual entertaining style? Your answer can help you determine whether you want a separate stand-alone living room or something more like a family room or even a great room concept.
How Big Does Your Room Need to Be?
When you have guests over, are you more likely to have larger or smaller groups? You may not want to take up a lot of space with your living room if you entertain in small groups. If the room will be used mainly for quiet conversation in small groups, a smaller room can feel more intimate.
How Will Your Family Use the Room?
What about when you’re not entertaining? Is this a room the family will use for reading, conversation or other activities? Again, you’ll want to think about whether you want a room that’s set off from other common rooms, or open to the kitchen and dining areas.
What’s Your Sense of Style in the Rest of the House?
Style does matter. If your house is a bit more formal, you may want a formal living room that fits in with the other rooms in your home. Above all, you should choose a living room (or family room) that makes you comfortable.
