Senior Controller

The Senior Controller is responsible for managing the financial operations of the company, with a focus on accuracy, efficiency, and compliance. This position ensures that financial records are maintained in accordance with accounting principles and regulatory requirements. The Senior Controller will also provide insights to improve financial processes, support budgeting and forecasting, and assist when necessary, in job costing for custom homebuilding projects.

Reports to: Chief Financial Officer

Leadership Responsibilities:

• Align with the company’s core values, strategic goals, and quarterly objectives.
• Participate in setting annual and quarterly financial goals in collaboration with the
Leadership Team.
•  Support cross-departmental initiatives by ensuring financial alignment with construction,
purchasing, sales, and design functions.

Responsibilities:

Financial Management and Reporting:

•  Oversee the preparation of accurate and timely financial reports (income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements).

• Manage the general ledger and ensure monthly and year-end close processes are completed efficiently.
• Develop and maintain a system of job costing for custom homebuilding projects to track profitability and manage costs.
•  Prepare detailed budgets and forecasts, including variance analysis to support decision-making.

Internal Controls and Compliance:

•  Implement and monitor internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure compliance with accounting standards.
• Coordinate insurance requirements and compliance (general liability, builder’s risk and workman’s comp).
• Ensure the company complies with local, state, and federal regulations, including tax filings.
• Coordinate with external auditors to ensure accurate and efficient annual audits.

Cash Flow and Treasury Management:

•  Monitor and manage cash flow and working capital to ensure operational liquidity.
•  Maintain banking relationships and coordinate loan draws and construction-related financing.
• Provide guidance on financial implications for company growth and investments.

Cost Management and Process Improvement:

• Evaluate and enhance financial processes to improve efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

• Collaborate with the Purchasing and Construction teams to ensure job costs are tracked accurately.
• Identify and implement opportunities for cost savings and margin improvements.

Team Collaboration:

• Provide financial insights to support operational decision making across departments.
• Partner with the CFO to prepare financial presentations for leadership meetings.

Performs other related duties as necessary or assigned.

Requirements
•  Bachelor’s degree in accounting or business administration required.
• Certified Public Accountant or Certified Management Accountant designation preferred.
• At least 8-10 years proven experience as a Controller or Senior Accounting Leader, preferably in construction or custom homebuilding.
• Expertise in job costing and project-based accounting.

• Strong understanding of GAAP, tax compliance, and financial reporting.
• Proficient in financial software and systems; experience with construction accounting software is a plus. Advanced Excel skills required.
•  Detail-oriented with exceptional analytical skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities.
• Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills to foster collaboration across teams.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Excellent organizational and time management skills.

Working Conditions:
• Extended schedule may be required as dictated by management and business needs.
